We’ve made a lot of noise about adopting the Michigan model here at the Lamp, but launching a campaign to raise billions of private dollars for the University of Arizona during a nationwide recession probably sounds unheard of to most UA students.

It should–at least, if you weren’t around in 2005, when former UA president Peter Likins wrapped up Campaign Arizona, an eight year long fundraising drive that raised 1.2 billion private dollars “more than 18 months ahead of schedule and in the middle of a national recession.”

Only the haircuts seem out of date in Campaign Arizona’s final report [pdf], which observes that the university funding process is “complicated by an erratic economy and state budget problems” and includes a reminder from then-Governor Janet Napolitano that though she’d love to lavish money upon higher ed, “other priorities continue to compete for limited resources.” Same as it ever was: and that’s a good thing.

Between the UA Transformation plan and state budget cuts, there’s been plenty of griping from administrators and faculty about cutting costs–but a dearth of ideas for raising revenue. Time for that to end. Campaign Arizona was one of the great achievements of Peter Likins’ presidency. Shelton should be eager to top it, and now’s as good a time as ever to try.
