ASUA Senate Meeting XX

Posted in Campus, Politics by Evan Lisull on 18 February 2009

It was a short one.

I. Consent Agenda. Two points to be made here:

1. The Newman Center requested $4,000 for an Alternative Spring Break in Mexico, but was flatly denied on the basis that,

The University of Arizona has taken a stance to remain consistent with the State Department’s request to not travel to Mexico, therefore [sic] ASUA cannot subsidize a trip to Mexico. ASUA would like to advise club members of the potential dangers.

This is a reasonable stance; yet if I remember correctly, ASUA’s own Senate just appropriated $980 for “safety cards” (of which, according to Sen. Mackenzie, only $400 or so was actually spent on the cards; the rest “will be returned”), on the basis that, “they’re going to go anyways.” So, placate the party mob, but stymie the religious charities? It’s not a perfect parallel, but there’s definitely an unseemliness here.

2. Fee-seeking P.I.R.G. made off with $637.78 for two registration fees and plane tickets to attend a leadership conference in Washington D.C.

II. Impeachment By-Laws Change. Like last week’s ado about nothing, it’s hard for an outsider to immediately explain the sudden necessity for clarification of impeachment procedures. “But I thought we were all best friends!” Somehow, I suspect that this is distinctly not related to Sen. Ellis’ campaign promise to “restore the responsibility of checks and balances.”

The changes are complex enough that the item was tabled, so that Senators can review the changes as carefully as they reviewed the Elections Code.

So hypocritical. The Mexico situation, that is.

Ah, well. We’ll see how much they enjoy their break when narcos shoot up the Rocky Point coast. Hell, they’d probably say “AWESOME FESTIVITIES, BRO! IT LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE A REAL GUNFIGHT! THIS IS THE BEST SPRING BREAK EVER!”

Getting shot up by narcos was never funnier, so thank you for that comment Jimmy. As for the hypocrisy, a TRIP TO MEXICO was funded an amount of zero as determined by the APPROPRIATIONS BOARD as we surely should not have university money funding the trip for reasons mentioned in the agenda. However, the cards funding was money for the PRINTING OF CARDS and the amount was determined by THE SENATE. The Senate is taking no particular position rather than choosing to provide a service for students acting under their own discretion as opposed to the appropriations board who chose to not grant those university resources necessary to be able to make that trip. Also, it is the catholic newman center, so there are more objections in terms of funding for this group beyond the safety of members making the trip. How can one be hypocritical about something they did not even determine themselves about an issue that is different?
