PIRG was a close call

Posted in Politics by Connor Mendenhall on 12 March 2009

Last night, we reported the results of the PIRG question as a percentage of the total vote. Now we have the actual count, and as you can see, it was close:

NO – 2411 – 52.20%

YES – 2207 – 47.79%

To those of you who read our coverage and cast a “no” vote to cast out PIRG: you are part of all that is good and true in Bizarro World. Student PIRGs have a nasty habit of persistent rent-seeking, so we’ll be watching the campus Nader crusaders for their next fee scheme. For now, however, this Pinto is up in flames–and the Lamp owes a thank you to every student who helped hit the gas and rear-end it.

I really think your work made a difference in the PIRG election results. Without your and Connor’s blog entries, comments on the Wildcat page, Facebook activity, etc., there’s a good chance it would have been passed. We really have you two to thank for the results.

Thanks, Laura! “Facebook activity” is a very kind euphemism for “nonstop trolling.”

Indeed, you guys persuaded me to decisively vote no and get my significant other to do the same. Cheers all around!
