UA, go on, brush your shoulders off

Posted in Campus by Evan Lisull on 24 March 2009

Jay-ZApparently, Kanye’s been passing on the good word about the UA:

Superstar rapper Jay-Z and “Americal Idol” pop singer Kelly Clarkson will headline the first concert at Arizona Stadium since 1977.

The April 29 concert is presented by the Associated Students of The University of Arizona and any profits from the show will go into a scholarship fund, ASUA president Tommy Bruce said in his announcement tonight.

The concert, dubbed The Last Smash Platinum Bash, will also feature ’90s rockers Third Eye Blind and Australian pop act The Veronicas.

In a battle of dueling wordsmiths, the UA definitely bested ASU. Mad props to ASUA on scoring this, even if questions about funding still have yet to be fully hashed out.

like to floss my cassette tapes in sixty-two’s
And my singles like gems, you know the treys
Get you high for a while, but the, high don’t stay
You need another fix, you better cop these last two bricks
Cause when this shit flip, I’ma get on some other shit
Never pitchin for a label, Jigga’s the hook-up
You know my shit is fish scale, y’all niggaz is cook up
Just blow up, scream my name from Brooklyn to Da-kota
They know my shit stretch without the baking soda
Went from an eighth, to a quarter, to a half a key
Priority’s work wasn’t right so I switched factories
Now I’m the new nigga, who figured I’d get the game locked
Now watch how the prices of your cocaine drop

This is an adequate penance from ASUA for bringing that Katy Perry trash here *twice* this year.

“any profits from the show will go into a scholarship fund”

cute phrasing there — if they happen to get any profits, it’ll go to a scholarship fund. i wonder how much money they are blowing on this up front, though. if i recall correctly, the kanye west show didn’t end up making very much.

regardless, i think it’s kind of a disgusting gesture to be making in a year when faculty fear for their jobs, staff are being laid off left and right, and students face huge hikes in tuition, fees, and housing rates. if ASUA has all this money lying around, why didn’t they put it toward something more immediately helpful? it’s like using your welfare check to buy lottery tickets.

I agree with Alyson. The show will be fun, but I was wondering the same thing.
