Smoker? On a budget?

Smokers got hit with the largest-ever tobacco tax increase this month. The federal smoking tax will now cost $1.01 per pack of cigarettes, an increase of 62 cents. The federal tobacco tax money collected in Arizona will be used for an Arizona health insurance program for children. State tobacco tax money goes toward health care, tobacco education and prevention programs.

21% of UA students smoke according to the 2008 Health & Wellness survey (n = 1250) administered by Campus Health Service.

If you were considering quitting before, now there’s financial motivation. Call the Arizona Smokers’ Helpline (1-800-556-6222), click on or talk to your Campus Health provider. Saving money never felt so good.

Of course, this sort of hypocrisy is exactly what you can expect when one supports programs that are funded by regressive consumption taxes, the modern-day equivalent of sumptuary laws.
